Dear Skålleagues,

“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”  This historic quote from JFK’s inaugural speech in 1961 resonates today as I pose a similar question about your local club committee.

Every club needs a core committee, typically comprising a President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and we always welcome additional members to join and assist. There are various roles available, but you can also contribute without a formal title.

Being a committee member offers numerous rewards, both locally and on a national and international scale.  With just a small commitment of time each month, you have the opportunity to influence and guide the success of your club, whether you hold one of the key positions or are part of the broader committee.

Benefits of getting involved include, but are not limited to:

  1. Helping to shape and grow your club

  2. Contributing ideas and opportunities for fellow members

  3. Building confidence personally and professionally

  4. Leveraging your experience and skills

  5. Strengthening friendships and business connections

  6. Mentoring and guiding newer committee and club members

  7. Participating in national and international meetings throughout the year

  8. Gaining a fresh perspective on your club

Some may feel that the workload is overwhelming but remember: “many hands make light work.” A strong committee shares the tasks, ensuring that no one person bears the burden alone.

Many clubs follow a succession plan for Presidents every year or two, and you might aspire to such a role in the future. Alternatively, you can play a crucial supporting role with your knowledge and experience. Regardless of your choice, the committee is the driving force and backbone of every local club.

As the new year approaches, take a moment to reflect on your committee and consider how you might get involved. Speak with current committee and always keep in mind: “Ask not what your Skål Club can do for you – ask what you can do for your Skål Club.”

Yours in Skål,
